| Abstract: |
AAAS established the Commmittee on Science in the Promotion of Human Welfare (CSPHW) in 1958 to explore the role that AAAS
might take in addressing social controversies involving science and technology. The committee, whose chairs included biologist
Barry Commoner and anthropologist Margaret Mead, issued reports on science and nuclear war, science and race, scientific integrity,
and secrecy in science. The committee was successor to an interim AAAS Committee on the Social Aspects of Science (1956-1958).
AAAS disbanded the CSPHW in 1974.
