The AAAS Board of Directors, begun as the Policy Committee in 1895, renamed the Executive Committee in 1920 and again as the Board in 1952, is the legal representative of the association and conducts its affairs. The AAAS Council, established in 1856 as a Standing Committee and renamed the Council in 1887, establishes the general policies governing all of the association's programs. Agendas and minutes of the meetings of these two bodies include discussion of program activities, appointment of new committees, committee reports, adoption of resolutions, changes in affiliation and fellowship criteria, membership recruitment, annual meeting planning, and other issues.
