J. Thomas Ratchford served as the AAAS Associate Executive Officer from 1977 to 1989, during which time he was involved in governance and managerial issues over the shape of AAAS and broader policy issues that affected the association and science as a whole. Ratchford also served as the director of the AAAS Office of International Science, focusing on the cultivation of a network connecting scientists and scientific associations around the world, and as the staff officer for the AAAS Climate Project.
