Committee on Arid Lands
Years covered: 1965-1989
Linear feet: 45.75

AAAS's earliest concern with arid lands began with a 1954 international meeting, proposed by the association's Southwestern Division, held in Albuquerque, New Mexico. UNESCO sponsored the meeting that included representatives from nearly 30 countries. By 1965, a AAAS Committee on Arid Lands (COAL) began to organize conferences and coordinate research efforts sponsored by public, private, and United Nations' groups. Records include conference materials projects on desertification and remote sensing, and a project with the National Park Service.
